The 10 Real Reasons Harry Reid Quit the Senate

Sen. Harry Reid announced on Friday that he will not seek re-election next year and will retire after serving for 30 years — including eight years as Senate Majority Leader.

The Nevada Democrat's announcement took some observers by surprise, but there are several compelling reasons behind the veteran politician's decision. Here are the 10 real reasons Harry Reid quit the Senate:

1. Reid faced a difficult re-election battle next year. According to a "Crystal Ball" report from the University of Virginia's Center for Politics, "We identified Reid as probably the most vulnerable Democratic incumbent in this Senate cycle." Retirement allows Reid to avoid a humiliating defeat.

2. Reid feared that another campaign in Nevada would take away money and attention from Democratic candidates in other states. "We have to make sure that the Democrats take control of the Senate again," he said in a statement he posted online. "And I feel it is inappropriate for me to soak up all those resources on me when I could be devoting those resources to the caucus."

3. He has been held responsible for the Democrats' net loss of nine Senate seatsin November. Republican Mitch McConnell, Reid's successor as Majority Leader, attributed the GOP surge partly as a rejection of Reid.

4. He was chastened by his difficult re-election fight in 2010. At one point he was down by 11 percentage points in a poll against Republican Sharon Angle, considered a weak and controversial candidate. Angle helped out Reid by, among other things, claiming that Dearborn, Michigan, was under Sharia law and saying the 9/11 hijackers had entered the U.S. from Canada. Angle still won 14 of Nevada's 17 counties.

5. Reid is battling back from injuries he suffered in a fall on New Year's Day, which left him with broken ribs and impaired vision in his right eye. He still wears darkened glasses to protect the damaged eye.

6. He's reacting to fallout from this week's inspector general findings. Reid's retirement announcement came just days after an inspector general said he used his influence to lobby a Homeland Security Department official for special treatment regarding visas for investors in a casino property in Nevada. Back in 2005, Reid earmarked a spending bill to provide funds for a bridge that would make land he owned more valuable. A year later, it was reported that Reid used campaign funds to pay for $3,300 in Christmas gifts to the staff at his condominium.

7. His age. Reid is 75. If he ran for re-election next year he would be 83 years old when his sixth term expired.

8. His hometown newspaper had come out against him. The Las Vegas Review-Journal last year castigated Reid for his comment that "five white men" on the Supreme Court ruled that businesses don't have to provide birth control if doing so would violate the employer's religious beliefs. One of the five was Clarence Thomas, who is black. The newspaper accused Reid of "race-baiting" and using "outrageous rhetoric."

9. Despite Democrats' losses in November, Reid could retire with a feeling of accomplishment. He succeeded in protecting President Barack Obama's deportation amnesty policy from Republicans who tried to end it through the spending process, and more recently he blocked an anti-human trafficking bill because it contained language barring federal funds from being spent on abortion.

10. He wants to spend more time with his family. Reid, a father of five, last year sold his home in Searchlight, Nevada, and bought a condo near Las Vegas so he and his wife — who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011 — could be closer to their grandchildren. Retirement enables Reid to spend more time with his family in Nevada instead of splitting his time between Washington and his home state.

Some Republicans cheered Reid's retirement announcement as aiding the GOP's success next year.

"On the verge of losing his own election and after losing the majority, Senator Harry Reid has decided to hang up his rusty spurs," said Ward Baker, executive director of Senate Republicans' campaign committee. "His retirement signals that there is no hope for the Democrats to regain control of the Senate."

Netanyahu, Obama, and … Zechariah?

Article by By Gary C. Lawrence
A front-page Wall Street Journal article last Thursday described a potentially ominous shift in relations between the United States and Israel:
“The White House upended decades of U.S. policy on Wednesday when it left open the possibility that it might not use its veto in the United Nations Security Council to shield Israel from unfavorable resolutions, such as the creation of a Palestinian state.”
America has been Israel’s staunchest defender since that day in May of 1948 when, within 15 minutes of Israel’s declaration of independence, President Harry Truman extended formal diplomatic recognition to the newborn state. Although Israel won its war for independence without active military involvement by the West, defense materials and intelligence coordination have been hallmarks of the U.S.-Israel relationship from the 1950s forward.
As I watched this unfold over the years – the Six-Day War of 1967, the Yom Kippur War of 1973, the Camp David Accords of 1978, the two Intifadas, numerous peace-process negotiations – and America’s steadfastness, I often wondered about Zechariah’s prophecies:
“And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut to pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it.”
And:
“For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle … Then shall the Lord go forth, and fight against those nations….”
When America has been Israel’s strong ally, and when this nation serves as the base of operations for the restored gospel, would the day really come when it would cast its lot with all the nations of the world and oppose Jerusalem?
It may have been a stretch a few years ago, but not since Barack Obama and Benjamin Netanyahu entered the ring.
The two have starkly different worldviews, especially who is the villain and who is the victim, what diplomacy can and cannot solve, the viability of a two-nation solution between Palestinians and Israelis, and when to use military power – all punctuated with a personal animosity U.S. presidents have usually reserved only for the Hitlers of the world.
And now the not-so-veiled threat to withhold the one tool the United States has employed scores of times to guard Israel against the powers of the United Nations, stacked with enemies as it is.
If you think the Palestinian Authority’s attempt to join the International Court of Justice and file war-crime charges against Israel will cause mischief, wait until the next time the U.S. would normally veto an anti-Israel resolution before the Security Council, and Ambassador Samantha Power takes a walk.
I am not saying we are about to witness a final ramp-up to those last-day events amply prophesied, but one thing is certain: Before the Savior ushers in the Millennium, Jerusalem (and by inference the state of Israel) must stand alone against the world. It must be surrounded by enemies and held under siege for 42 months (perhaps the number is metaphorical, but the point of abject isolation remains nonetheless). The residents of Jerusalem will come to realize that no other power on earth will fight for it. They must be brought to know that only the Messiah can save them. They will not be able to say, “We could have handled it.”
In the months ahead, Netanyahu and Obama, such close buddies that they are, may do more to help the Lord hasten His work than we realize.

Obama Floats Idea for Mandatory Voting

This is scary.  Just ask someone living in Peru what happens when everyone has to vote!

Article by
CLEVELAND  — President Barack Obama is floating the idea of making it mandatory to vote in the United States.
Obama is discussing voting rights and campaign finance in an appearance at the City Club of Cleveland. He says the U.S. should be making it easier — not harder — to vote.
The president is noting that countries like Australia have mandatory voting. He says if everyone voted in the U.S., it would completely change the political map.
Obama says it would be "transformative" and would counteract the influence of money in politics more than anything else.
Obama also says he thinks it would be "fun" for the U.S. to consider a constitutional amendment to decrease the role of money in elections. But he says that would realistically take a long time.

Every black person in America should vote for a Republican in “just one” election.

article by
ESPN host Stephen A. Smith said Tuesday that he hopes every black person in America votes for a Republican in “just one” election.
The comments came toward the end of a talk at the Impact Symposium at Vanderbilt University in Nashville and were captured on audio by a conservative website.
“Before we get on out of here … I’m about to say something that people might take, put out there or whatever the case might be. Buckle up and get ready,” he said.
“What I dream is that for one election, just one, every black person in America vote Republican,” Smith continued. “Want me to tell you why I feel that way?”
“From what I’ve read, Barry Goldwater is going against Lyndon B. Johnson. He’s your Republican candidate; he is completely against the civil rights movement. Lyndon B. Johnson was in favor of it — civil rights legislation,” Smith explained.
“What happens is, he wins office, Barry Goldwater loses office, but there was a Senate, a Republican Senate, that pushed the votes to the president’s desk. It was the Democrats who were against civil rights legislation — the southern Dixiecrats. So because President Lyndon B. Johnson was a Democrat, black America assumed the Democrats were for it.”
Smith didn’t stop there.
“Black folks in America are telling one party, ‘We don’t give a damn about you.’ They’re telling the other party, ‘You’ve got our vote.’ Therefore, you have labeled yourself ‘disenfranchised’ because one party knows they’ve got you under their thumb. The other party knows they’ll never get you and nobody comes to address your interest,” he said.
“We don’t do that with politics,” he added. “And then blame white America for our disenfranchisement. It is us.”

ISIS Vows to Bomb 'White House, Big Ben, and the Eiffel Tower'

Article by Joel Himelfarb

ISIS has declared its intention to "blow up your White House, Big Ben, and the Eiffel Tower," its official spokesman said in a new audio message.

An ISIS spokesman said Thursday that the organization had accepted a pledge of allegiance from the Nigerian terror group Boko Haram, Canada's National Post newspaper reported

In a 28-minute Arabic-language audio, translated by the SITE Intelligence Group, ISIS spokesman Abu Muhammad al-Adnani declared that Boko Haram's move was "a new door opened by Allah" and said jihadists should go to West Africa.

Adnani said ISIS wanted control of numerous cities across the globe, including Jerusalem, Kabul, Rome, and Paris.

The ISIS spokesman warned Jews and Christians that they could either "convert to Islam or pay the ultimate price when your armies are expelled from Muhammad's peninsula, from Jerusalem, and all Muslim lands," Ynet News reported

He said that if Jews and Christians continued on their current path, they would soon regret having done so and be incapable of preventing the surge to the caliphate. "The Jews and the Crusaders are scared and weak," said Adnani.

"We — with Allah's help — want Paris, before Rome and Islamic Iberia and after we blow up the White House, Big Ben, and the Eiffel Tower before Paris, and Rome," he warned. "The Muslims will return to power, to be the vanguard and lead in every place."
