The AP covered up Obama's geography gaffe when he was on late night comedian show Jay Leno. Obama said,
"If we don't deepen our ports all along the Gulf, places like Charlston, South Carolina or Savannah, Georgia, or Jacksonville, Florida. If we don't do that those ships are going to go some place else." They are port cities but not a single one is in the gulf. They are on the Atlantic ocean.
So the AP did a little editing, parenthetically, to help out the president by writing " If we don't deepen our ports all along the Gulf...(and in) places like Charleston, S.C, or Savannah,Ga, or Jacksonville, Fla..if we don't do that, these ships are going to go someplace else"
This is not the first time that Obama has included these cities as part of the Gulf. On July 25 as he was in Jacksonville, FL. He said "some of these gulf ports...Charleston, Savannah..."
The media has been much less forgiving in the past for presidential speech blunders. Larry Sabato, from the University of Virginia, said "Nobody thinks that AP would have fixed up this quote for George W. Bush. In fact, the presidential mistake would have made the headlines and been instant fodder the late-night hosts like Leno. The media sees Obama as 'smart' while Bush was 'stupid'. Thus, Obama simple had a slip of the tongue while Bush would have demonstrated foot-in-mouth disease."
